Monthly Even Pay Plan
The monthly even pay plan averages your yearly propane cost over an 11-month period, giving you an easy way to budget your propane usage. Month 12 is catch-up month requiring account balances to paid in full. We then calculate your usage for the coming year based on current prices. Your price per gallon is capped each season so you can have security in knowing what your yearly cost will be. Working in conjunction with route delivery prevents unexpected out of gas situations.
Pre-Buy Contract Propane
The Ballenger Propane Pre-Buy Program is a locked-in price per gallon of propane you purchase upfront for the entire season. No matter how crazy the markets get, that’s the price you’ll pay throughout the term of your contract. Contracts are offered in July with full payment required before the contract goes into effect.

Reading your propane tank gauge is easier than you might think! It’s as easy as lifting the tank lid and checking the percentage of gauge inside. Not all gauges are the same, but all gauges will help you understand the fuel levels in your propane tank.
Most propane tanks utilize float gauges. A float gauge measures the propane capacity in the tank via a floating arm. If it reads 30% or less, it’s time to schedule a propane delivery.
When Ballenger Propane tops the tank off, it should read about 80% capacity. That doesn’t mean we filled the tank improperly, it means we are keeping you and your family safe.
Propane is used in your home as a gas but is kept in the tank as a liquid. We only fill propane tanks to 80% capacity to protect the tank from expanding and contracting as temperatures rise and fall. This is very important in Missouri’s varied climate.
If you can do simple math, you can calculate the amount of propane in the tank. All you need to do is multiply the tank's capacity by the gauge reading. If you rent a 1000-gallon tank and it’s at 40% capacity, you have 400 gallons of propane in your tank.
1000 x .4 = 400
If math isn’t your thing, Ballenger Propane is happy to help. We’ve created this helpful chart that tells you when it’s time to refill the tank.
Gauge Reading | 120-Gallon Tank | 250-Gallon Tank | 500-Gallon Tank | 1000-Gallon Tank |

Once you know how much propane you have in the tank, you can estimate how long it will last. To make a good estimate, you will need to understand the British Thermal Unit (BTU). The BTU measures how much energy it takes to produce heat. Your appliances are rated for different BTUs depending on their rate. Keep in mind one gallon of propane typically has 92,000 BTUs.
Step 1: Figure out how much propane you have in the tank using the calculation provided above.
Step 2: Check your appliances for their BTU rating.
Step 3: Divide the 92,000 BTU of one gallon by the BTU rating of your appliance
Step 4: Figure out how long it takes to use one gallon of propane.
Let’s say you have a gas furnace. The average gas furnace uses 90,000 BTUs per hour. Simply divide the BTUs of 1 gallon or propane by the furnace's 90,000 BTU. You will burn one gallon of propane in a little over an hour. If you have 400 gallons of propane in the tank, you can burn your furnace for roughly 400 hours. Of course, you should never let a tank run empty. Contact Ballenger Propane when your tank reaches 30% capacity to avoid a dangerous situation.
